Bandcamp’s BC Weekly feat. Dexter Story & Kid Gusto

Dexter Story_Wondem

This week’s BC Weekly over at Bandcamp features some excellent new music from many artists I’ve never heard before.

I’m excited that the mix features some new music that I worked on. Two projects that are dear to my heart: Dexter Story’s Wondem and Kid Gusto’s Right Place EPTwo special doses of music therapy for you soul.

In an interview with Andrew Jervis, Dexter Story recalls stories explaining how the trumpet began his first instrument and the current state of LA’s thriving music scene.

Also in the mix is some new Contact Field Orchestra (my Ethio Cali brother, Damon Aaron) and the recently new Hailu Mergia produced by Max Whitefield of the Poets Of Rhythm.

Enjoy! ~ Todd

#JazzOn45 DJ Mixes

jazz on 45

Over the summer, I began compiling some of my favorite 45’s to share out with the world. I ended up spinning all-45 sets at LeMellotron in Paris, Danny Halloway’s Blazing 45’s in LA and over at Joey Altruda’s new Shanghai Noir night at General Lee’s in Chinatown (LA).

In case you are in the need of some solid mixes on vinyl, here’s a batch of recent DJ mixes that have surfaced online…

I hope you enjoy these selections as much as I do…

New Quadron Video

quadron_avalanche_cvr_5x5_hr

Long-time collaborators Quadron just released a new video for the track “Favorite Star” off of their recent album Avalanche featuring my Brassive Attack horn section: Tracy Wannomae (winds), Elizabeth Lea (trombone) and Pablo Calogeo (winds). Avalanche is a special album with lush vocals, grooves, and textures. Coco O and Robin Hannibal are musical geniuses. Peep this sexy clip courtesy of  OkayPlayer.com:

Kelis!

kelis-food

I’m proud to announce that I am the music director for Kelis. I worked extensively on her new album, FOOD, along with producer extraordinaire Dave Sitek providing horn and string arrangements in addition to recording brass. This record has been so much fun to work on. It features some of the finest musicians in LA.

The horns are such a big part of the sound, Kelis has asked me to direct both UK and US bands. I am excited and eager to be a part of this experience. Kelis has always been one of my favorite contemporary vocalists with her brilliant tastes and always impressive voice. It’s a treat working with her. We see eye-to-eye and share the same musical sensibilities.

You can hear Jerk Ribs and Rumble here.

Upcoming performances:

Feb. 28th – BBC 6 Music Festival, Manchester, UK; March 3rd – Metropolis Studios, London, UK

March 12-14 – SXSW (various venues to TBA)

April 21 – Late Night w/ David Letterman
